Description

This intensive at the Highlander Center for Research and Education, in Tennessee, will provide a variety of opportunities to explore the connections between community organizing, non-formal adult education, participatory action research, transformative learning, and social change for social justice. The Highlander Center has been involved since the 1930s in catalyzing and supporting movements for justice, equality, and sustainability including the labor movement, the civil rights movement, the environmental justice movement, the feminist movement and the immigrant rights movement. For more information about Highlander, please visit their website. Please also visit this link for a short video about the history of Highlander.

At this intensive, we will learn from the Highlander staff about their approach and their current work, meet in the community with local groups working for social justice that Highlander has been supporting, and learn from and with one another, as we discuss common readings, present our work from ongoing KAs, and engage in various experiential learning activities, group dialogues, and cultural events. In our work together, we will attempt to engage in the sort of participatory and empowering approach to learning that Highlander embodies.

The cost will be $365/person and will cover 4 days of room & board and transportation to and from the Highlander Center from the Tyson-McGee Airport in Knoxville, TN. The $365 fee is fully refundable if requested prior to April 1, 2014. A partial refund of $265 will be provided for cancellations that take place on or after April 1, 2014.

This intensive can be applied to all KAs in Social and Ecological Justice, Social Change, Structural Inequality and Diversity, Systems, Human Learning, Praxis, and Advanced Research Modules in Participatory Action Research. Please contact Steve Schapiro at sschapiro@fielding.edu for questions surrounding course work.
